You do not need a calculator for every percentage. A few dependable building blocks let you estimate tips, discounts, and portions quickly.
Start with 10% and 1%
To find 10%, move the decimal one place left. Ten percent of 86 is 8.6. To find 1%, move it two places left: 0.86. These two anchors can build many other percentages.
Build 15% and 20%
Fifteen percent is 10% plus half of 10%. For 80, that is 8 + 4 = 12. Twenty percent is twice 10%, so 20% of 80 is 16.
Use fractions for 25%, 50%, and 75%
Twenty-five percent is one quarter, 50% is one half, and 75% is three quarters. Twenty-five percent of 120 is 120 ÷ 4 = 30. Seventy-five percent is 90.
Estimate awkward percentages
For 18% of 70, find 20% (14) and subtract 2% (1.4), giving 12.6. Estimation is also a check: the answer must be a little below 14.
A calculator is often the quickest way to check your mental math. The important part is using the right starting value.
